[edit] Backstory
Born in Manchester in 1977 Jase was left in a children's home, when he reached to his teenage age of 15 a gang took him under their wing resulting him to be violent, getting involved in the wrong crowd and mainly being a criminal. Jase made Karen Brown pregnant she gave birth to Jay in October 1994, when Jase later got sent to prison Karen died of breast cancer in 2004.
[edit] 2007–08
Jase arrived in Walford in search of his estranged son, Jay (Jamie Borthwick), on 19 July 2007. He appeared to flirt with Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton), angering her husband Billy (Perry Fenwick). When Billy found Jase's letter regarding visits to a probation office, he told the community that Jase was a criminal, causing them to shun him. When Jay discovered his father had been in prison, he reacted badly and was arrested for carving "LIAR" into a bus shelter, referring to Jase's lies about where he had been all his life. Despite the initial animosity, Jase and Jay began to bond.
During October 2007, Jase met Terry Bates (Nicholas Ball) leader of a gang of football hooligans, who looked after Jase when he was a teenager. It was Jase's involvement with the gang that had led to his imprisonment and Jase didn't want to be part of the gang any longer, as he had a son to look after. Terry was angry about this and made various threats to get him to reconsider. Jase refused and, in November 2007, Terry's gang raided The Queen Victoria public house looking for him. Jase was dragged into the cellar and beaten. Meanwhile, a heavily pregnant Honey Mitchell called the police and was knocked over by the gang and went into premature labour. The baby she gave birth to appeared to be stillborn, but was resuscitated by the medics. Jase swore revenge on Terry and threatened to kill him to gain his freedom, but was stopped by the intervention of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who called the police; the gang were arrested. Phil wanted repayment for his help and forced Jase to assist him in his various vendettas.
Following a brief fling with Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons), Jase cultivated a more serious relationship with Dawn Swann (Kara Tointon), whom he proposed to on 6 June 2008. He unknowingly began working for May Wright (Amanda Drew), the woman who had planned to adopt her daughter, Summer. When Dawn changed her mind about May adopting her baby, May tried to kidnap her instead. A violent confrontation occurred when May tried again to abscond with Summer and caused a gas explosion in Dawn's house; Jase saved Summer's life, catching her when she was dropped from a first floor window. With their home burnt down and no money, Dawn began to fret over their financial future. Wanting to please Dawn, Jase took a mysterious call saying he would do "one more job for him." The next day Jase brought home a bag full of money. Dawn then spent the money on various things including clothes and rent money for a new flat.
In July 2008, it was revealed that Jase had adopted Summer and his name had been put on her birth certificate.
Dawn's demands continued, so Jase continued to do more jobs for his associate. When he came home beaten and bloodied, he was forced to admit to Dawn that he was once again working for Terry Bates. Dawn was initially furious, but despite realising he was involved in criminal activity, she made no attempt to stop him as she was desperate to keep the money and get the wedding of her dreams. Jase spoke of leaving Walford to escape Terry, but Dawn then announced that they had set a date for their wedding, ensuring that Jase could not leave.
Jase cancelled his stag night in August 2008 to collect £100,000 for Terry. Jase reluctantly took Billy on as a getaway driver, revealing his intention to steal Terry's money. They agreed to split the money 60/40, however upon arriving at the location of the job, there was no money, only a note stating that Terry and his men had Jay and the job was a setup. When they arrived back at the flat in search of Jay, Jase was greeted by Terry and his men wielding baseball bats. Jase and Billy managed to save Jay but Jase was brutally beaten up by Terry's men. Billy witnessed this but was too scared to help Jase and hid in the bathroom. After beating Jase up, Terry fatally stabbed him. The police arrived and arrested Terry and his men, however, Jase later died of his injuries in hospital. Dawn discovered his death on the day of their wedding. On August 29 2008, Jase is last seen where Jay identified his father's body in the mortuary. He was eventually cremated on October 7, 2008, with Jay, Dawn, Darren (Charlie G. Hawkins), Garry (Ricky Groves), Minty (Cliff Parisi) and Billy attending the funeral. In May 2009 Billy is being blackmailed by Nick Cotton (John Altham) who threatens to tell Jay about his cowardice at the night of Jase's death, realizing he can't live with the guilt Billy confesses the truth to Jay resulting him to react in rage, he then is threatened by Terry's wife Viv Bates (Dido Miles) that if he testifies in court she will hurt Jay, Terry's gang also tell him to stay away from the witness stand, Jay is kept hostage by the gang, Billy saves him and they rescued by the police. In court Billy finally testifies which results Terry receiving life imprisonment for Jase's murder.
[edit] Creation
[edit] Casting, Introduction and First appearance
Jase is introduced as the father of Jay Brown played by Jamie Borthwick he made his first on-screen appearance on 19 July 2007. on In June 8 2007 in Digital Spy it was announced Stephen Lord will be joining the cast of EastEnders as the father of a troubled schoolkid Jay Brown.[3]. An EastEnders insider told Producer Diederick Santer "Stephen Lord's character Jase is an enigmatic character in his mid thirties and arrives on the Square looking for his son. They mentioned the fact that "We don't know much about him, but what we do know is that he hasn't been in Jay's life for years and he was never a doting parent." They also added "He has a dark past riddled with shocking secrets. To sum him up, he's a dead wrong'un." Happy being in EastEnders Lord said: "It feels really good to be here." Executive Producer Diederick Santer commented: "I am delighted that EastEnders has attracted yet another top class actor to its cast, they say "Stephen Lord is an actor of great talent and charisma, and I hope that his character Jase will attract, intrigue and entertain the audience in equal measure." The character is also described as a "fit man". The character's flashback was when he was in a gang he was sent to prison due to his unruly behaviour.
[edit] Characterisation
The actor Stephen Lord's character Jase is described as an "ladies man", and a "dodgy person" because ever since his first arrival in Walford he managed to sort his behaviour out. Lord claimed "the reason why Jay was acting like this because when his mother Karen and grandmother Evie Brown (Marji Campi) died of cancer, Jay went off the rails by doing bad thing but when his dad arrived he began bonding improving his behaviour. But when they get over that it's obvious Jay's happy to see his dad but Bert's not so sure. First off he wants convincing he is definitely Jay's dad!" So does Bert think Jase is a bad lot? "The truth is Bert doesn't really know Jase. They've not had much to do with each other. He just assumes Jase is up to no good."And is he right? Well you can see why Bert thinks that – there's definitely something of the dark horse about Jase. He doesn't give much away.
