Two mortar shells fired from Syria landed inside the demilitarized area Monday, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.
Residents of the Golan Heights called emergency services and reported loud booms coming from the direction of the border.
Israeli officials told Ynet news that the mortars were clearly not intended to reach Israel.
"The military was prepared for any incident on account of the instability in Syria," an Israeli military spokeswoman told Reuters news.
Earlier in the week, mortar shells hit Golan Heights as the Israeli Edu Barak defense minister was making an inspection tour there. No casualties were reported.
On Friday, Barak said that he would act to prevent Syrian refugees from entering Israeli-occupied areas of Syria.
"I ordered the army to increase the readiness level of intelligence and get prepared for what is necessary in order to be able to study the implementation process," Barak added.
Meanwhile, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Chaim Waxman, filed a complaint to the Security Council, in which he wrote that Syrian troops entered the demilitarized zone between the Israeli and Syrian borders.
"This act is a blatant violation of the 1974 Armistice agreement and has serious potential consequences for regional stability," Waxman said
For his part, Israeli prime minister Benjamin NetanyahuBenjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is less concerned with what replaces the regime in Syria and more with what happens to Syria's anti-aircraft missiles or ground-to-ground rockets, in addition to transferring chemical weapons from Syria to HezbollahHezbollah in Lebanon.
In a related development, Israel's Ynet news reported that about 100 Israeli Druze students from the northern Golan Heights studying in Damascus sent an urgent request to the Red Cross to enable their return to Israel. Their request was rejected because the organization said it was impossible to secure their transfer from Damascus through the Quneitra border crossing.
