Twin bombings near security service buildings in the centre of the capital wounded four people on Sunday, Syrian state television reported. Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the attack.
"A strong twin explosion took place Sunday, near the headquarters of the Syrian army in Al-Mehdi Street, in the neighborhood of Abu Roumaneh located in the center of the capital Damascus. Four people were injured and damage was caused to neighboring buildings", said SANA news.
Witnesses told Reuters the explosion was very strong, left several dead and columns of smoke were visible across the capital. The attack took place near a security services building which is tasked with protecting the army's General Staff, whose headquarters is located in the central Umayyad Square, around three kilometres (two miles) away.
Abu Remmaneh is an upscale neighbourhood in the heart of Damascus, and is home to several embassies as well as senior state officials, including Foreign Minister and Prime Minister.
On their part, the rebel Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on Facebook, in which it also threatened to attack President Bashar al-Assad's palace.
"This operation was carried out in response to the massacres in Daraya," said the statement, referring to the killing last week of at least 330 people in a town near Damascus. Regime and rebel forces blamed each other for the massacre.
Earlier, SANA reported that a suicide car bomb killed 15 people on Saturday evening near a Palestinian refugee camp in a suburb of the capital Damascus, Al-Sbeineh. The attack was attributed to an armed terrorist group. The Suzuki car, exploded near a mosque, according to the government newspaper "Teshreen" .
Al-Sbeineh is known to be a suburb hostile to the regime of Bashar al-Assad . Citing an official source, the newspaper said the victims' bodies were shredded by the force of the explosion, which damaged homes in the area.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian was killed in Syria when a shell landed in Yarmouk refugee camp, the man's family said. They also added, he was married with seven children and was originally from a village near Ramallah.
It is worth mentioning that, around 400 Palestinians have been killed in Syria so far, mostly by snipers, Palestinian official WAFA said in early August.
Opinion:
For those who do not know Abu Roumaneh area, it is one of the most important areas in Damascus with very strict security existence. Syrians always say that even a mosquito can never pass that area without permission.
The arrival of the Free Syrian Army to Abu Roumaneh area, means that we must be optimistic towards soon victory.
Syrian regime will be reticent to his losses for a simple reason, that he can not declare, that he no longer controls the area of Abu Roumaneh. In other words, this will mean near fall for the regime.
For sure, the Free Syrian Army will continue targeting very sensitive areas, which will be nearest to the presidential palace. Free Syrian Army, no doubt, controls many areas in Syria, particularly Damascus. Syrian Regime is playing the last part of his dirty bloody game.
