Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has begun its latest missile exercise on Monday, named "The Great Prophet 7",which will last three days, it will also include launch of dozens of missiles, in addition to the Fateh 110 (200 km) missile and 3 Shahab ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) which can reach Israel, southern Europe and U.S. bases in the region, Iranian media reported.
The drill is expected to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of firing these missiles, Iranian media added.
Iranian officials did not specify the identity of the base, whose replica would serve as the target during the maneuvers, but Iranian military officials have repeatedly threatened, in recent years, hitting U.S. bases in the Gulf and the Middle East if Iran was attacked.
On his part, commander of Iran's IRGC Aerospace Division Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh said on Sunday that Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems, Iran’s Press TV reported.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Hajizadeh threatened Israel saying it will be destroyed if it “ventures an attack” on Iran.
"Any attack on Iran by Israel would be answered resolutely: If they take any action, they will hand us an excuse to wipe them off the face of the earth", said Hajizadeh.
The announcement of the war games coincides with the beginning of a European Union oil embargo against Iran, cutting the import of Iranian oil and petrochemical products to EU countries.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Minister of Oil Industry Rostam Ghasemi said his government has undertaken measures which will reduce the embargo’s effect to nil, because other countries are still purchasing Iranian oil.
However, the Iranian Mehr news agency said Iran could take measures to counter the new international oil sanctions, including shutting the vital Strait of Hormuz off its southern coast. A fifth of the world’s oil supply comes through the Strait, and Iran has threatened repeatedly to close it.
