Creating A Signature Product For Your Business

Paul B Evans - Signature ProductThis month in my Private Brainstorming Group the "Monthly Elite Challenge" was fast product creation. It was a lot of fun to brainstorm creative ideas, and to see members dig in and make it happen!

I join in the challenges myself and work alongside my members, and as you already know: I released a new product last week.

Unlike topical short reports and other things I've created in various niches over the years, this particular challenge brought out what I considered a Signature Product for me.

I called it a "Signature Product" because this particular product is based on my core values, and this one topic is central to everything that I teach and do online.

I actually thought I was original in calling it that (which is never the case anytime I think I've come up with something original, lol)...

At the exact same time that I published a video discussing my Signature Product, Paul Evans announced a brand new training series on the topic of Creating Your Signature Product.

Let's just say he was reading my mind (lol). Which may not be too far from the truth, given how closely aligned our values are. Paul Evans is one of those people I can really relate to, and have the highest respect for, by the way.

You've heard me talk him before no doubt. He's one of the few I attach the word "integrity" to in this industry. I love learning from him too, because his training is always very practical and highly actionable. If you've ever heard him speak, or followed any of his work online, you know exactly what I mean.

This is actually the first time in almost two years that Paul Evans has released a new 4-week intensive training series, and I recommend you check it out and give it serious consideration.

The series is called Signature Product: 4 Week Interactive Intensive for Creating High-Ticket Products. This will be a step-by-step training on how to create your product from scratch. No PLR, interview techniques, etc. Every. Single. Step.

Join in to create a 100% original high-end product for your business!

If you sign up fast you can get access to the free series leading up to the day he opens the Signature Product interactive training. During this free series you'll get:

  • Monday: A video on "What is a Signature Product? & Why You Need One."
  • Tuesday: The "More" Principle and why it qualifies you to release a product of this caliber. If you have ANY hang-ups about creating a high-end product then this will erase those and leave you without any excuses.
  • Thursday: The "Signature Sequence" Part 1. This series will show you how to launch a Signature Product. It's one thing to release a $7 report - a $97+ product is totally different.

Then on Thursday the doors will open to the Signature Product 4 Week Interactive Intensive. The only way to get an invite, and to get access to all of the free content above, is to click this link.

By clicking that you'll be automatically added to the mail outs for everything related to Signature Product. All the free high-value content from Paul Evans, including the Signature Sequence, which is worth $97+ all by itself.

The content leading up to the live training is free, and you'll want to sign up if you're at all interested in having your own $97-$997 Signature Product...

(And you should be, no matter what your niche or business model!)

Click here to learn why & how to create your Signature Product.

I am super excited to have finally released my own Signature Product, and I would LOVE to see you do the same! :D

Best,

p.s. You'll want to act fast on this as it starts THIS week. I'm signing up myself, because I have more products in the works and want to learn faster more efficient ways of releasing them. Let's do this!

This post does contain my referral links for the Signature Product Series, but only on my highest recommendation - as usual. At the very least, take advantage of the free content Paul is offering. ;-) *cheers*

ClickBank vs JVzoo: Choosing Your Payment Processor & Affiliate Program For Info Products

JVzooOnce I created my digital product, the next step was to choose a payment processor with a built-in affiliate program. I had planned on using ClickBank - which is one of the oldest and most popular solutions available.

I decided to check into the newer JVZoo network before making a final decision, though. I've used it as an affiliate of course, so I did some research to compare ClickBank and JVZoo from the perspective of a merchant.

I started by doing some basic research on Google and comparing the rates and features of ClickBank and JVZoo. Next I asked for feedback on Facebook. I was interested to hear opinions from both merchants and affiliates...

If you read the comments at the Facebook post above you'll see that Scott Lovingood said, "I like JVZoo as a customer because ALL my purchases are in one place. With clickbank it can be tough to find things at times." This is true - and a nice benefit from the buyer's perspective. Customer Service was another hot point - JVZoo is "awesome to work with" and gets a big thumbs up for personal support & service.

Benefits of JVZoo over ClickBank:

  • You have the option to run a closed affiliate program on JVZoo.
  • The affiliate program at JVZoo has a 2-Tier option.
  • JVZoo allows you to set up JV contracts with different commission rates and/or terms than general affiliates.
  • JVZoo offers Instant Payment for both merchants AND affiliates.
  • As an affiliate, if you offer bonuses, JVZoo will deliver them automatically for you when someone purchases through your affiliate link.
  • JVZoo will notify affiliates by email (that requested it) of high converting offers.
  • You can manage refunds personally through JVZoo.
  • The JVZoo system doesn't allow people to purchase through their own link, bypassing the affiliate that referred them.
  • ClickBank charges 7.5% + $1 per sale. JVZoo only charges 5% per sale (note: you'll pay PayPal fee's on each sale as well).
  • It's FREE to set up your product on JVZoo. ClickBank charges a $49.95 setup fee.
  • Products under $50 are automatically approved at JVZoo.
  • JVZoo has a members forum where you can get help, network with other vendors, ask questions, and even recruit affiliates!

Drawbacks of JVZoo:

  • You have to file 1099's manually, where ClickBank handles that for merchants. That said, JVZoo does collect the tax forms and give you a list of affiliates that qualify for a 1099 - so it's easy enough.
  • ClickBank has a larger database of affiliates searching for products to promote. But JVZoo is growing fast, and any affiliate program requires active recruiting.
  • JVZoo currently only accepts PayPal as a payment method, BUT they are in the process of implementing more payment methods which should go live anytime now.

There's another drawback to using any major affiliate network such as JVZoo or ClickBank: there's no way to create a mailing list that includes ALL of your affiliates so that you can communicate with them regularly.

While you can set up an Affiliate Page and have affiliates opt-in to receive affiliate links and updates, affiliates can easily find and promote your product(s) through the network directly - bypassing your list and resources altogether (unknowingly, even).

One cool benefit of JVZoo is that you can message affiliates individually through the network. So if you have an affiliate consistently performing well, you can contact them directly and offer them incentives or rewards - or communicate with them to see how you support their promotions (with exclusive interviews or other perks).

With a self-hosted affiliate program you lose the benefits of a network, but gain total control over affiliate communication. So that's definitely something to consider. I've worked with 2Checkout (aff) and iDevAffiliate (aff) if you're looking for options.

After researching and comparing the two networks, I decided to go with JVZoo and set up my product and affiliate program there - which literally only took a matter of minutes.

BUT, I also registered the .net version of my domain and duplicated all of the pages - to set my product up on ClickBank as well. I don't plan to actively promote this domain, but it's a great backup, and it also puts my digital product in the popular ClickBank Marketplace. ;-)

I hope this comparison proves useful if you're looking for a payment processor and affiliate program for your digital products. I was really impressed with JVZoo after researching all the features they offer, and I think it's good to finally have a working alternative/addition to ClickBank.

I would love to hear YOUR thoughts and experiences too.

Best,

World Gratitude Day: This is Pinteresting…

What you see above is an embedded post from my Facebook Page. There are a couple things I want to share with you regarding that update that you'll find particularly useful for YOUR online business...

Creative Content Angles

Today, Saturday September 21st, is World Gratitude Day. It's one of many interesting observances you can use for creative content angles on your blog and/or your social media channels. If you plan in advance, you can use holidays and observances to create sharable content (or "share bait") for higher engagement. And you can also use them to release special offers, new (related products), fun discount codes (WGD20 for 20% off on World Gratitude Day only! -for example).

For even more ideas see this post.

Be sure to download the FREE Blogging Calendar (aff). I have it printed out and keep it in a 3-ring binder on my desk for easy reference. ;-)

In addition to the holidays and observances already included in the free blogging calendar, you can find more fun quirky observances with a simple Google search. This past Wednesday (September 18th, 2013) was National Cheeseburger Day for example! Which I used as a creative content angle for a social media post here.

A Pinteresting Use of Photos & Images...

Pinterest TemplatesThe Pinterest Easy Title Templates (aff) are great for so much more than just creating awesome Pinterest images!

As you can see in the cover graphic example to the right, these templates are also great for creating beautiful ebook & report covers. Other great uses include sharable Facebook images, and creative images for your blog posts.

Pinterest is HOT right now, and the better your images (no matter where you publish them!) the more likely they are to get pinned and shared.

Pinterest Easy Title Templates make it super simple with drag & drop image creation. And you don't even need fancy image editing software. You can use the free web-based program at Pixlr.com!

I used these templates to create the text over the waterfall photo in the Facebook update at the top of this post. I also used them to create a fun update on my low carb blog, which you can see here.

You can get the entire package of image templates - with more than 40 different styles in 200+ colors - for only $15. That's a steal. ;-)

Happy World Gratitude Day!

In honor of World Gratitude Day I would like to say THANK YOU for being part of the ClickNewz community! I so enjoy sharing tips with you, hearing your thoughts, and having the opportunity to connect with you & get to know you!

Without you, I'd be talking to myself. :-|

I'm grateful for you today, and every day of the year! :D

Best,

* Disclosure: I am an affiliate for the BlogEnergizer FREE Blogging Calendar and Pinterest Easy Title Templates. Both are awesome downloads I use myself, and highly recommend. Enjoy!

Behind The Scenes: Product Creation Case Study

info product creationI took this photo during the "final edits" phase of an info product I am about to launch publicly. I emailed the PDF file to my local printer to print & bind so I could go back over it in detail.

So far my Elite Members are the only ones that have been privy to a secret look "behind the scenes" while I created this product over the last few weeks.

In this post I'm going to share all the nitty gritty details publicly...

And let me just say, this super affiliate has a whole new respect for digital product creators!

As you probably know, I've been doing some form of Affiliate Marketing for around 16 years now, and I've been doing niche affiliate marketing online specifically for well over a decade.

As an affiliate marketer I don't have to worry about product creation, sales pages, launches, recruiting affiliates, customer service, etc, etc, etc. And with physical products, no shipping!

It's been an ideal model for me over the years, particularly when I worked less hours due to my lifestyle. So why create a product now? Good question...

My Info Product
Digital products actually complement affiliate marketing quite well. As an affiliate marketer, creating information products is a great way to better serve your market. It also allows you to build a list of buyers, which is a great asset to any affiliate marketer.

In the screenshot to the right, you see thumbnails of my product. Writing a report is not that much different than writing a blog post. Since I created this product on my Macbook, I used a program called Pages. But you can use a free word processor like Writer from OpenOffice.org, which will allow you to create a document and export it as a PDF file.

In addition to having a product to sell, and building a list of buyers in your niche to follow up with, you'll also be able to recruit affiliates to do much of the marketing for you. So creating a product is a great strategy even if you don't already have a list or a following of your own.

As for why I decided to do this in my business now, there were two reasons:

First, I've been working on a list of new helpful tutorials & downloads for my Private Brainstorming Group members. I'm always looking for new ways to help them take their business to the next level, and wanted to add to the library of resources there.

It only makes sense, if I'm going to create informational products for them, to also make those available for sale publicly. Any work I do, I look for ways to make the most of the time invested.

And second, because it's high time I share my expertise with the world! :D It's one thing to blog for 9 years straight, but many of my tutorials are buried in the archives. So I've decided to create and release topical tutorials as a means of really helping people move forward faster with their online business.

And of course there's the Passive Income aspect. Once you create a digital product, and get active affiliates promoting it for you, you'll have a passive source of revenue that pretty much operates on auto-pilot.

The How and Why behind my Info Product Strategy

I'll just tell you upfront that my strategy with this product was bass-ackwards. I don't mind to make that confession, and I also don't mind to tell you why I did it that way.

You might call it brilliant, you might call it stupid, but either way I got it done. ;-)

We'll start there. I'm a procrastinator by nature. I doubt I'm alone on that one, lol. Procrastinating is different than being a perfectionist, which can also really hold you back. I'm definitely not a perfectionist! :P Bigger projects just tend to overwhelm me, and when I get overwhelmed I get stalled. So for this particular project, I used my micro-tasking method - which works GREAT for me.

blog post
The PRE-Selling Method

I decided to sell my product before I even created it. I got the idea for this info-product one weekend, and published a blog post announcing the "live training" on a Sunday evening - scheduled for that Tuesday.

That gave me just over 36 hours to actually "create the product" IF there were any sales. And if not, no sweat. Since I was creating the product via a live webinar, it was easier to "create" (I just needed a topical outline).

What I did there was put myself on the hook. I forced myself to create a product on a very real (short) deadline. Procrastination was NOT an option.

This is a prime example of my Act Fast: Implement & Revise As You Go! advice. ;-)

If you don't ACT on an idea, it will only ever be a great idea. Nothing more. And I find if I dilly dally too long with the details, I tend to get overwhelmed in the "planning phase" and never make it to implementation.

Note: I don't recommend you follow this model if you don't feel confident you can bust your butt and pull off an awesome product on time. That said, it does work particularly well with live trainings, or video-based digital products where you can have people register in advance to attend live while you record the actual product.

I had a super low price point and a super short deadline for the pre-sale. Both, or either used alone, encourage an "impulse buy". Not only could people get a great deal, they could participate live, by acting fast on the offer.

Obviously if there was interest (meaning sales), the product would get created, and then the price would increase on the finished product for the official launch.

There were close to 70 sales at $15 per, for a total of around $1,000 earned upfront. My members got free access of course, so there were even more registered to attend. So of course I showed up on Tuesday and taught the topic live:

Social Marketing Results

The only real "set up work" I did upfront was to write the blog post, create a PayPal order link, set up an Aweber list for people to receive the log-in link and the replay, then email my list and invite them to join in live. I also invited people via my Social Media channels, of course.

In hindsight, I'm really shocked I was able to teach the topic in 2.5 hours. I originally planned for it to be 90 minutes or so, but looking back on it now I'm surprised I was able to pack all of that into less than three hours!

The topic was on creating a strategic social media marketing plan, by the way. You can see the details here.

I planned to wrap up a PDF version from the webinar outline, as a bonus, but ended up spending over two weeks fleshing it out with even more creative ideas and live examples. I also created six additional documents: reference sheets, worksheets, checklists, etc. PLUS set up a private Facebook Group for members-only brainstorming & continued resources.

Over-delivering is GOOD.

The people who acted fast on the offer got A LOT for a very low price. And once I got on a roll teaching the topic, and then writing the training guide and supporting documents, I ended up with an awesome product created.

Definitely a win-win! :D

Doing a pre-sale, or a pre-launch like this has allowed me to work some of the kinks out upfront with a relatively small group of buyers. It also means the Facebook group will be active (not empty) & engaging by the time I officially launch.

Speaking of an official launch, that's where I am now in the process. Instead of wasting time figuring out the best way to create or design a sales page, order buttons and cover graphics - I outsourced the sales page design & cover graphics quickly and inexpensively. (I've worked with him in the past with great results & recommended!)

First, I took care of my buyers and members...

I created a simple download page that includes the replay, an invite to the private group, and download links for all seven bonus documents. I also asked them for feedback and testimonials - which will be helpful for writing the sales copy (and/or making any revisions to the product before going public).

Tip: Always take care of your buyers first, ahead of finding new buyers.

Next on my list is to write the sales copy, set up the payment processing and affiliate program, upload the sales page with a working order button, create the email follow-up series to help buyers make the most of the product, continue keeping the Facebook Group active and engaging, invite members and buyers to join the affiliate program (first), then send out review copies to potential super affiliates.

So there you have it! This may not be a conventional (or even practical) product creation & launch method, but I shared it with you here to inspire you and hopefully give you some creative ideas as well.

Note: here's the secret PayPal link where you can still order the "Social Marketing Results" package for only $15 if you missed out on that before. That link will only be good until I get the new sales page up at SocialMarketingResults.com in the next few days - but it still works for now if you want to grab it cheap! ;-)
